Burlington Waterfront

Until the early 1990s, the suggestion of a leisurely stroll along the shore of Lake Champlain at the foot of College Street would have puzzled most UVM students. After all, the area was at various times a major lumber port, bustling rail yard, bulk petroleum storage facility, and area of general dilapidation. But over the past 30 years the City of Burlington has taken on an ambitious rehabilitation and redevelopment program that has transformed the waterfront into a hugely popular hub for recreation and relaxation. Thousands of younger alumni will only ever remember it as such.
